Visiting a foreign country does not have to be prohibitively expensive. And traveling on a budget does not mean having less fun on vacation. In fact, creative choices and thorough research can result in an inexpensive vacation that provides a more exciting, relaxing, or educational experience.
For example, consider lodging at a local bed and breakfast, or in a hostel, rather than an expensive hotel with unnecessary services. A bed and breakfast can be much more charming than a full service hotel, and equally as safe, or safer for, families. For adult travelers, a hostel may offer fewer amenities than a hotel but saves significant expense while providing all the necessities. Both bed and breakfasts and hostels will provide greater opportunity to meet and speak with locals or experienced foreign travelers.
Searching for less conventional lodging fits an overall trend when traveling on a budget. The fact is, in nearly all areas accustomed to tourism, travelers pay more for the same services or quality of service than those who are more familiar with the region. Businesses know that foreign travelers are likely to pay more for familiarity, even if they’re traveling with the intention of experiencing new things. Finding the hotels, restaurants, and markets that locals make use of helps your travel budget go farther.
