With more and more countries embracing mobile phone technologies all over the globe, one region stands out among the rest due to its vast population. Asia, more than any other continent on Earth, has more subscribers than any other region. China’s largest mobile phone company, China Mobile Ltd., has experienced a huge burst of growth over the past few years and now stands as the world’s largest mobile phone company with well over half a billion subscribers on its network. Chinese consumers seeking out mobile phone deals and low cost service have flocked to China Mobile in record numbers, helping the company achieve total global dominance. With sales having climbed a full 9 per cent in a nine month period that extended from 2008 to 2009, the company now earns over $4.2 billion in net income per quarter.
China Unicom, a Hong Kong based telecommunications company, provided solid competition for China Mobile, but the Chinese giant expanded into areas of the rural country side where few other companies have been willing to go, at the same time reducing prices for its services. Since China is the world’s largest market for mobile phone devices and service, competition is notoriously fierce. Despite China Mobile’s place as the worst performing stock among the three Chinese mobile phone companies, the company has managed to maintain momentum, adding more customers to its subscriber base than the total populations of the United States and Japan combined. This is a massive leap forward for the Chinese who have historically not always been able to embrace technology as quickly as some rival nations in the region such as Japan.
